Abstract

Online course anxiety (OCA) and its impact on learning outcomes and educational achievements are documented in the literature but problems that emerged in online language class following OCA are under-researched. This study determined the interplay of students' OCA and engagement in online language class on their participation style (PS). Findings revealed moderation of anxiety and moderation in participation style, and very true to me in student engagement . In terms of the correlation of the variables, participation style and emotional engagement were found to be statistically correlated. The paper concludes with insights into the consequences of OCA in online language class and offers recommendations to mitigate it by improving digital infrastructures and learning resources, as well as changing teachers' rigid teaching styles. The implications of this study can inform decisions of ASEAN Teacher Education Institutions related to the efficacy of online teaching practices and the learning outcomes of students.
